Sturgis Bike Week

A letter from the Chip... It's difficult to believe the rally was only 2 weeks ago. The entire Chip crew works all year to prepare for the coming rally.

Then, surrealistically, it "suddenly" starts and the next thing we know, we need a few days' sleep to recover.

Now we're preparing to welcome you to the 2011 rally, which is only 338 days away. Part of the 2011 preparation is a recap of the rally just experienced, so here it is.

First, thank you for the many compliments given to the crew. They deserved it. Though not without the seemingly unavoidable challenges when the human population of this pasture explodes from zero to tens of thousands, the crew really outdid themselves this year.

Second, a special thank you to those of you who sent cards thanking us for putting on the Chip. Your telling us how much you enjoy the Chip is what makes it worthwhile for the crewmembers to invest so much of their lives to make the Chip what it has become.

Third, we extend another special thank you to those who've already made reservations for 2011. It isn't just that, like some of you have said, you're the smart ones who will have paid less for two weeks' camping and shows than someone else will probably have to pay for the day the Rolling Stones confirm. It's really the ultimate thank you and note of appreciation for the job the crew has done.

Now, finally, I'll review of the details of 2010's physical stuff. Many of you have seen and heard me say when one is in a "people" business, one is really in the water, toilet and trash business. I should have added "electricity" to the list.

The year of planning and preparation really paid off in minimizing the number of challenges and in having the ability to take immediate curative action. I'll start this recap addressing the challenges the crew met.

The first challenge I'll address is the electrical power. This worked exceptionally well throughout most of the campground's 560 acres during the entire rally. However, the South 40 experienced some problems, reportedly related to the high temperatures experienced rally week.

The S40 power is provided by West River Electric Cooperative. WRE replaced multiple transformers during the rally, which caused temporary losses of power while the exchanges were being made.

Almost everyone was out riding, so many were unaware of it. The issues were experienced on Tuesday and Wednesday, and I believe the WRE issues had been resolved by late Wednesday afternoon.

WRE engineers are presently investigating preventative measures to insure there'll be no similar problems encountered in 2011. We will take them at their word.

The second challenge to discuss is the toilet attendants. One might suspect there are not a lot of people looking for employment as toilet attendants. That has been our experience.

It's why we were so pleased to contract with a group from Florida that performs these services at a number of other public events, including bike rallies at Daytona Beach. They did an outstanding job for the Chip in 2008 and 2009. However, unexpectedly, they let us down in 2010.

We thank those who came in to replace the contractors who'd let us down, but there was certainly a transition period when things were not up to standards. Like I said, the professionals had performed admirably for the two prior years.

We had confidence they'd provide the same stellar performance in 2010, but it turned out we shouldn't have. Backup plans will be in place for 2011.

A couple of non-functional toilets were to have been, but were not, removed prior to the Rally. Their removal was apparently just overlooked, and they're being hauled off now. Our apologies for letting it appear there were a couple that simply weren't properly maintained.

Now on to the trash, which was, overall, handled very well. Oh, there, too, some folks let us down, but the backup crew picked up the slack immediately and there was only one day where the trash was even slow to be picked up.

The replacement crew was very impressive. Thanks, too, to Waste Connections for providing additional dumpsters and trucks, as that really helped avoid any trash problem. That leaves water.

The water supply system seems to have worked perfectly. We have 3 wells and a chlorination system that feeds water throughout the campground. The entire rally was supplied without incident or even the need for a repair. Yahoo.

The showers went quite well. The two companies that vend showers were appreciated and made private showers available at the east and west ends of the campground. The free and permanent showers at the North Shower Building worked well without incident throughout the rally. The showers at the South Shower Building, however, experienced some challenges.

The South Shower Building's showers are heated first by a 500,000 BTU boiler and by a series of 4 large hot water heaters. The boiler broke early in the rally (nothing breaks until after the rally has started).

There simply aren't a lot of 500,000 BTU boilers available in the neighborhood, but we found a rental and had it in place later the same day. The rental boiler, however, broke repeatedly.

The rental company was not able to make it dependably and continuously fully operational until Wednesday. The 4 hot water heaters continued to work but, depending upon the time of shower, couldn't always keep up with the demand for hot water. Luckily, it was really hot weather and a semi-cool shower wasn't always unwelcome.

Now, let's discuss more good stuff. The entertainment was truly exceptional. No one fell off the stage. More than 200 Chipsters got to be "extras" and can be seen in Pee-wee Herman's biker bar scenes now on "FunnyOrDie.Com" or on Jay Leno's Tonight Show broadcast of Wednesday, August 11.

Others got to help with Schwinn Bicycle's Biker Buddy program where 60 bicycles were assembled and ultimately gifted to The Black Hills Children's Home.

It was a year like no other. A senior vice president at Warner Brothers Records commented that he hadn't seen a comparable entertainment lineup anywhere in the United States for more than 5 years. We got to see Bob Dylan and Kid Rock on the same stage on the same night! Incredible!

Nothing is without challenge, however, and, again, nothing breaks until mid-rally. The Buffalo Chip is privileged to have a brand-spanking new state of the art line array system that produces sound second to none.

I'd never heard anything sound so good and, when I saw folks come out of the campground just to check out that sound during the sound check, I knew others were likewise impressed.

The state-of-the-art technology included a system that prevents bands from blowing out the speakers. Motley Crue, however, seemed to have had a super high-tech ability to overcome the safeguards and blew out about 25% of the system on Wednesday.

The crew reconfigured the system to provide balance and only one or two of you audiophiles could tell the entire system wasn't working when Ozzy Osbourne performed on Thursday.

Parts specially flown in from LA were in place and the entire system was back in use on Friday. No one had to perform acoustically, thanks again to a very competent crew.

Another challenge I believe to be related to the good stuff involves fans who have handicaps. We simply had more of these attendees for the Dylan show than we'd ever anticipated, which caused some inconveniences in the midst of a huge campground and concert crowd. It'd be nice if we had advance notice of special needs and preferences so we can better plan.

Another good topic is the traffic reports that indicate many more Chipsters utilized the alternate routes and avoided the traffic congestion that is the City of Sturgis.

Likewise, many utilized the new road the Chip developed to assist Chipsters to exit the Chip more quickly by riding past the machine gun range to enter directly onto SD Highway 34 from 132nd Avenue.

This worked really well, and it's hoped even more folks print out the maps (available on buffalochip.com) and utilize the routes shown in 2011.

Well, that's about it, or at least as much as I know of at the moment. Please do send us your suggestions for improvement. We take them all seriously and look forward to seeing your smiling faces again next August.

Woody & Crew

Last week Pee-wee Herman did a segment on Leno from the 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, and this week Funny Or Die brings us some even better footage of Pee-Wee having a blast with bikers.

Paul Reubens' hysterical character still has it after all these years and fits right in with the Sturgis crew after rolling up on his bicycle. Not only does Pee-wee get a tattoo and swap road stories with the other bikers, but he even takes the party back to his place after last call. Like all good parties, it ends with a play-tent full of hot ladies and Lorenzo Lamas.

Although this new Nissan is spun from a version of company's excellent B-platform that also underpins the Versa, Cube and LEAF, in Juke-spec, it gains a number of key enhancements. For openers, its over-the-top styling is complemented by an aggressively sporty suspension tune that also brings a three-inch wider track dimension and standard 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in grippy V-rated 215/55 tires. Underhood, the Juke boasts a high-tech 188-horsepower turbocharged engine while inside, a host of enthusiast-grade design touches add even more emotional appeal to what remains at its core, an extremely practical vehicle.

May be your favorite car in the category if...

Love being the center of attention and hate misplacing your ride in a crowded parking lot? The Juke could well be your personal dream machine. It's also destined to score big with anyone seeking a feature-rich personal transporter that delivers a world-class combination of fun and affordability.

May not be your favorite car in the category if...

Those who lean towards more traditional styling or are willing to sacrifice a bit of performance for an added measure of economy could well find a more compatible running mate in Juke alternatives like the Kia Soul, Mazda3, Scion xB, Suzuki SX4 and Toyota Matrix. The upcoming Mini Cooper Countryman also figures to be a prime potential rival.

Driven to exceed

Whether front- or all-wheel drive, the 2011 Nissan Juke is an exercise in confident control. Although some may ding its spring/shock setup for being a tad too harsh over rough pavement, body roll is impressively curtailed and the decently-sorted electric power steering, wider track and healthy wheel/tire fitment help ensure that the Juke feels equally at home zipping through the twisties or cruising down a freeway. Opting for the sophisticated intelligent all-wheel-drive package that includes class-exclusive rear torque-vectoring capability also trades the base torsion-beam rear axle for a multi-link design that further enhances the Juke's already impressive cornering prowess. However, stability/traction control and antilock disc brakes are standard across the lineup.

Inside moves

Despite a dearth of soft-touch surfaces, Nissan did endow the Juke's relatively spacious and well-finished cabin with unique visual flair and lots of functionality. A thick-rimmed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and well-bolstered front buckets team with a driver-friendly dash layout and legible main gauge cluster. The Juke's high-rise center console puts the shift lever within easy reach and is contoured like a motorcycle gas tank to serve as an effective leg support. Scaled to accommodate average-sized adults, the Juke's 60/40 flat-folding rear seat can be dropped to bump cargo space from 10.5 to 35.9 cu ft. Front-drive models also feature hidden stow space under the cargo floor.

What you get for around $20,000-$23,000:

Opening just under $20,000, the front-drive Juke S comes with all of the trick engine/suspension bits detailed previously along with the CVT automatic. Opting for AWD adds another $1,500 to the bottom line. In either case, "S-spec" also brings an expansive list of standards including power windows/lock/mirrors, air conditioning, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio, iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, cruise control, keyless remote entry, a multifunction steering wheel, trip computer, vehicle security/immobilizer systems and front/front-side/side-curtain airbags.

Starting slightly below the $21K mark, the Juke SV expands that formidable features list with things like premium upholstery cloth, a power moonroof, automatic climate control, the I-CON integrated controller, XM Satellite Radio (subscription required), a USB port and privacy glass while also allowing buyers to match the engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission or opt for a $500 CVT upgrade. Beyond that transmission choice, the lone "option" on this (or any other) Juke model is an $800 Navigation Package that brings an SD-card based navi system with 5.0-inch color LCD screen, a speaker upgrade with Rockford Fosgate subwoofers and USB connectivity.

What you get for about $23,000-$25,000:

You're strictly in Juke SL territory at this level, where powertrain configuration is the sole determinant of the specific sticker numbers. All three versions of the Juke SL include the SV-plus-Navigation Package goodies plus leather upholstery, heated front seats, the RearView Monitor system, fog lamps, and auto on/off headlights.

Features of note:

I-CON (Advanced-Integrated Control) system interface

Standard on the Juke SV and SL, Nissan's slick I-CON interface/display readout located in the lower center dash area can be toggled between "Climate" and "D-mode" at the touch of a button, each accompanied by its own specific graphics. In the former, I-CON commands all heat/air functions while the latter lets the driver choose Normal/Sport/Eco settings that appropriately revise the electronic mapping for throttle response, transmission shifts and steering feel.

Intelligent AWD with Torque Vectoring

Available on all three Juke trim levels, Nissan's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system can create up to a 50/50 front/rear power split and also distribute torque from side to side on the rear axle to improve handling and reduce understeer when cornering.

State-of-the-art motivation

All versions of the 2011 Nissan Juke are fitted with the automaker's new 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder that boasts the holy trinity of modern engine tech -- direct fuel injection, turbocharging/intercooling and variable camshaft timing -- here on both the intake and exhaust side -- to deliver an impressive mix of performance and economy. Making an enthusiastic 188 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque, this free-revving four matches well with both the CVT automatic (which features the driver-selectable S-mode that serves up six "virtual" gears) and the conventional six-speed manual transmission. It also has plenty in hand to deal with the added weight of the all-wheel drive system. While a manual-equipped front-drive Juke can sprint to 60 mph in around seven seconds, the CVT and AWD add about a half tick each to that baseline figure. On the mileage front, a front-drive/CVT Juke earns 27/32 mpg city/highway EPA numbers, with the manual FWD getting 24/31 mpg marks and the CVT AWD coming in at 25/30 mpg.

KBB value analysis

It's tough to predict exactly how the new Juke will fare in the long run, as so much of its fate will be determined by the way U.S. buyers respond to its admittedly polarizing exterior appearance. However, we can confirm that dynamically and functionally, this new Nissan has what it takes to create some serious buzz in the compact crossover segment and boasts an enviable cost-to-benefit ratio, regardless of how it's configured.

Advice and tips for buying your first motorbike

Are you a real motorcycle fan?. Read on, this article is written for you. We collected tons of useful tips on how to choose the type of motorbike that would suit your personality and your needs the best. We will tell you what to look for in your next bike, whether to buy used or new..  If you are seriously thinking about buying a new motorcycle, you should definitely read this article before you make your final decision.
Before buying a new motorcycle, you should get familiar with the different brands and styles available. Most people think that  bikes fall into three categories: street bikes,  off-road bikes and dual-purpose bikes. Bikes can fall into other categories or cross categories. Let’s take a look at the different bike types and categories:

Standard Bikes: These bikes came from Japan in  the 1960’s. They meant cheap but reliable transportation for young and older riders alike. There is not a huge selection of standard bikes on the market today, due to the fact that other types are extremely popular. The Honda Nighthawk for example, is a typical standard bike that comes with a 600-700 cc engine. This is a good choice for beginners. They are well balanced, well powered, light-weight and they also offer a pretty reliable form of transprotation. Some manufacturers offer crossover bikes, like the Honda Superhawk. This bike is based on the Standard Nighthawk, but it includes some of the aerodynamic and performance features of a sport bike. This choice offers the style of a sport bike with more comfort.

Touring Bikes are made for street use only. A touring bike is built for comfort, as well as highway cruising and for longer trips. Their large engine ranges from 1000-1500 cc. their weight varies between 700-1000 lbs. These bikes are hard to maneuver, therefore they are not recommened for beginners. These bikes can be used for long distance riding, but only for those who have some experience. Touring bikes are not made for city trael.

Sport Bikes: fall into a sub-category of street bikes. Sport bikes can be defined like fine sports cars and many young rider prefers them to other styles. Sport bikes are built for performance, comfort and convenience. The engine size usually ranges from 600 cc to 1,200 cc. These bikes can weigh from 350 lbs to 500 lbs. Because of their light-weight, even a 600 cc sport bike will offer impressive acceleration, braking, and turning. These bikes are not planned for long trips.

Cruisers: they are one of the most popular types of motorcycles. These are one of the most popular styles of motorcycle, so bike-makers offer a wide variaty of bikes to fit every budget and many levels of experience. They can weigh between 450 lbs-1000 lbs. A cruiser is stylish and comfortable. You can choose a model that is ideal for highway and city travel.

Dual-Purpose Bikes: Dual-Purpose bikes have knobby tires and a high center of gravity.Their headlights, turn-signals and emission control makes them suitable for street riding.  Because these bikes weigh upwards of 350 lbs, they are not meant to ride on rough terrain, but they are great for dirt roads and trails. They also offer the convenience of  street riding. These bikes come with 400-600 cc engines.

Motocross and Enduro Bikes: These bikes are meant for off-road only use. These bikes are very light. They can weigh between 150 -300 lbs. Their small engine ranges between 50-500 cc. They are cheaper than street bikes. Motocross bikes are great for recreational purposes but not for heavy traffic.
